What my monster is
My monster is called Turtle Monster and is based on the Japanese folklore 'Urashima Taro'. Turtle Monster is a carrier that connects the human world and the Dragon Palace that is underwater. Turtle Monster has a purple and olive-coloured shell with multiple circular feet that help it glide on water. It also has a mystical oar that opens the portal to its world: a streak of bluish-white light. Turtle Monster has stuck with me since I first heard of this folktale more than a decade ago. It is the bridge between two worlds: reality and imagination. In my work, Turtle Monster is the guardian of the lone, peaceful waters that it protects from hordes of people entering.

Why my work is an artwork
My work tries to capture human feelings of longingness, desire and curiosity by depicting a group of people trying to enter an unknown world. Drawing a parallel to Urashima Taro (the main character in the folktale) opening the box he was asked to never open, the people in my work gather in flocks attempting to experience something beyond their imagination but disappear into nothingness - ultimately losing the only thing they had - their world.
